Retaining walls are important structures routinely used in construction sites to keep soil in place expand land use and withstand vertical loadings There are various components that may be exerting a lot of pressure from above and behind (sand, earth filling, fluid pressure, soil, etc). A lot of pressure is exerted, and proper engineering designs need to be used. Retaining wall designs must include overall site global stability and the presence of water from runoffs or any such extreme event. Retaining walls are mostly vertical structures and they provide support and stability throughout.

The main kinds of failure that may occur are — overturning or toppling, sliding, internal failure, and bearing capacity failure. Different types of retaining walls are built, depending on location and material, among other considerations to satisfy client needs.

Gravity Retaining Wall-

Stands on its own weight and is massive. Testing out bearing, overturning, and sliding forces is important and routinely done. Examples include retaining walls built in residential applications. A type of gravity retaining wall used in specialized cases is a retaining wall geogrid.

Pile Retaining Wall-

Piles are normally dug extremely deep, and this counterforce negates the top force that can push the wall over. This is used for temporary work mostly.

Anchored Retaining Wall-

High retaining walls have deep cable wires or rods driven deep and sideways into the earth, and then an ‘anchor’ of cement is filled. It is called a ‘tieback’. Normally, employed in highway construction in hilly terrain especially.

Cantilever Retaining Wall-

This kind of retaining wall is made of a base slab and a thin stem and is composed of concrete. Maybe precast or can be made on-site.

Nilex offers cutting-edge and practical retaining wall design choices. They can be green, wire-faced, or hard surface retaining wall systems that incorporate geogrid technology. Many products are available for your use, and they can be used for commercial, residential, and industrial contexts respectively.

What is a geogrid?

It is any geosynthetic material that is used to reinforce soils or similar materials. Some of Nilex’s products that use geogrid technology include-

1) Nilex ECO Temp Wall- this is a very cost-effective, temporary retaining wall with a geogrid, a design that utilizes a black welded wire basket facing with geotextile wrap, and is stabilized by a uniaxial geogrid reinforcement backfill. This can be used in reinforcing temporary walls.

2) Nilex ECO Wrap — This is an innovative eco-friendly vegetated wrap-faced reinforced slope system. It is made of a backfill reinforced with uniaxial geogrid and an erosion control turf mat that is stabilized with biaxial geogrid respectively. This product can be used for slope stabilization and embankments.

3) Nilex ECO Rock Wall- This flexible structure works well against any seismic activity or differential settlement, This wall can be built vertically or with batter, designed with galvanized wire baskets and reinforcing geogrid. Aesthetically pleasing.

Nilex ECO Green — Eco-friendly vegetated retaining wall design. This wall has wielded wire baskets with an erosion blanket wrap filled with topsoil and seed to promote vegetation. The system utilizes uniaxial geogrid to reinforce the backfill and can be built at a steeper slope angle of up to 70 degrees.
