The Clarke Lake road bypass
This project service falls under the head of “road and rail” services offered by Nilex. The purpose for the construction of the Clarke Lake Road bypass was to provide an alternate route for truck traffic that was shorter and away from residential areas. The two-lane bypass was designed to stretch along 4 kilometers of undeveloped area containing vegetation over soft clay. In addition to this, the project was required to be wrapped up in three months because of weather constraints. The experts at Nilex recommended the use of biaxial geogrids and assisted the owners in evaluating the advantages of using Tensar® Biaxial Geogrid with the SpectraPave2 software developed by Tensar Earth Technologies. The biaxial geogrids helped confine granular pieces and interlocked them into place. This kept the surface stiff and contributed to improved road performance.
The Troutbrooke drive slope stabilization
Nilex’s installation services helped nine families in Toronto, whose houses were located near a slope that was eroding. The Toronto Region Conservation Authority required MSE walls to be installed for the stabilization of the slope. The challenge that the experts at Nilex faced was coming up with a solution that with afford protection for a long time as people’s lives were at stake. It was also important that the solution would blend in seamlessly with the natural environment of the slope. SierraScape, one of the retaining wall systems offered by Nilex was the perfect solution. The system provides extra reinforcement as it consists of two geogrids- uniaxial and biaxial. The flexibility of the geogrids made it easy to install them on the slope and the unique design allowed for different facing options including vegetation that was natural to the terrain. The system spread across 1500 square meter and was installed very easily by 4–6 people without having to use a crane. In addition to the installation services, Nilex also trained the crew and offered engineering assistance and technical assistance.
The Saline Pond Multi-layer liner system
Nilex was approached by a gas operations company near the North Saskatchewan River in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta to help them meet their compliance requirements and improve their capability to detect leaks. The installation services of Nilex were offered in cooperation with other site trades for the best quality. The challenge was to install a system that would not only line the pond but also detect the smallest of leaks that the QC test might not pick up. Nilex was a general contractor in this project and offered 3rd party testing and reliable products. The specialist at Nilex recommended conductive spark testing for detecting small leaks. When the existing liner was tested and found to be in good condition, it was decided to retain it as the secondary liner with the primary liner being one made of HDPE. This ensured that even in the event of a leak, it would be contained without polluting the lake.
The Interstate 94 erosion control
The experts at Nilex were called in for erosion control after an increased volume and velocity of storm water caused significant soil erosion along drainage channels that were on Interstate 94 near Lawrence, Michigan. The area was sparse with vegetation and had sandy soil. This challenge was overcome by installing GeoRidge check dams to decrease the velocity of water. Furthermore, turf reinforcement mats and erosion control blankets were also installed to reinforce soil and vegetation.
